Governor Scott Breaks Ground on Winter Haven Rail Terminal

November 8, 2012 | WMFE - Governor Rick Scott joined with civic leaders in Winter Haven to break ground on a new rail freight terminal Thursday. The terminal is expected to take advantage of increased cargo traffic through Florida ports.

Polk County leaders joined with Governor Scott and other officials sinking their shovels into the ground to kick off construction of the terminal, on more than 300 acres of land near Winter Haven.

It will serve as distribution hub for trains and trucks delivering freight through Florida and Governor Scott says it will help position the state as a leading trade hub.

“If you think about it, one of our biggest strengths [is] 15 seaports, our location closer now to the Panama Canal expansion, we’ve got the expanding economies of Latin America, Central and South America, so now we’ve got to take advantage of that.”

Scott says the terminal, which is being built by CSX affiliate Evansville Western Railway, will help create about 8,500 jobs when it’s finished in 2014.

The project is also the result of CSX moving freight traffic to accommodate the SunRail commuter train.
