Scott Asks Florida Schools to Review Security Measures  December 18, 2012 | WMFE - Following the deadly school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, Governor Rick Scott is calling on school leaders throughout the state to review and enhance their school district's emergency plans.
Governor Scott spoke with reporters in his capitol office Monday and expressed sympathy for the families of the children and school personnel killed in Friday’s school shooting. “I think of my daughter who was a school teacher, my sister in law who was a school teacher, my brother who was a principal and where they could have been.” Scott says he sent a letter Monday to school leaders around the state asking them to review and enhance their school emergency plans. “I sent out a note to all the schools to make sure they look at all their security measures and make sure their parents are comfortable. The governor is asking school officials to work alongside state and local law enforcement and the Department of Education to enhance on-campus security Scott says, for now, he’s staying away from discussions about gun control policy and just wants to focus on the grieving families in Connecticut. "Right now, what the conversation ought to be about is mourning for each of these family members and I think there will be an appropriate time to talk about two issues, the violence that we have and mental illness.” Scott says school should be a sanctuary for learning and creativity where students, teachers and parents feel safe. In Orange County, Mayor Teresa Jacobs is proposing a plan to post armed sheriff’s deputies as in all elementary schools in unincorporated Orange County. Middle and High Schools in the county already have school resource officers on campus. Jacobs says the plan would cost between $2 and 3 million dollars for the rest of the current school year.
