December 26, 2012 | WMFE - Florida led the nation in new death sentences in 2012. A new report shows the state sent 21 convicts to death row during the last year.

The report from the Death Penalty Information Center says Florida sentenced more convicts to death than any other state.

Nationwide, seventy-eight people received the death penalty.

Only nine states actually executed prisoners during the year with 43 people put to death in the US. Three of those executions were in Florida.

Texas led the nation in executions in 2012 with 14 people sent to the death chamber.

The report says fewer juries are sending convicts to death row nationally and five states have abolished the death penalty in the past decade.
