Sanford Mayor Hopes SunRail Will Spark Development

December 31, 2012 | WMFE- With SunRail due to start in just over a year, construction is ramping up at stations along the central Florida commuter train line. The mayor of Sanford hopes the SunRail station will help spark development west of the city's historic downtown.

Sanford is part of the first phase of the SunRail commuter train set to begin service in May 2014, and work has already begun on the parking structure at the new station, near the intersection of State Road 46 and Airport Boulevard.

Mayor Jeff Triplett says the land around the Sunrail stop is ripe for development.

“Some say we’re not so blessed with our location of our station compared with some of the other cities where it’s coming right to their downtown core, but that gives us the opportunity to do something great because of the vacant land that’s out there," says Triplett. 

Triplett says the city also wants to ensure SunRail passengers have an easy way to get downtown- about two miles away- or to the airport.

SunRail is not the only big development underway in Sanford- the city also broke ground in 2012 on a mixed use complex near Seminole Towne Center which will include 360 apartments.
