Orlando International Airport Plans New People Mover  January 2nd, 2013 | WMFE- Orlando International Airport is moving ahead with plans for a new automated people mover and parking garage to cope with more passengers. The people mover complex would also serve as the terminal point for new passenger rail services into the airport. The airport already uses an automated people mover- an elevated rail system- to move passengers between the terminal and the boarding gates. Those vehicles are due to be replaced, and Phil Brown, the executive director of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority, says the airport is also selecting design and construction companies to build a new APM line and complex to the south. “We’re going to proceed with getting approvals from the airlines and doing the design work on the people mover complex," says Brown. "We’ve got a schedule we think we can make. In negotiations with All Aboard Florida, they’re going to want to see that in place when they build their station.” Private rail companies like All Aboard Florida, which wants to start a passenger service between Orlando and Miami, could also connect at the new people mover complex. Phil Brown says the mover could be ready by 2015. It will connect with a new parking garage, and give the airport extra capacity until it’s ready to build a brand new South terminal. The airport currently serves 35 million passengers a year, and the trigger point for building the new South terminal is when passenger numbers hit 45 million. Phil Brown says that could happen as early as 2017. |
