Orange County Elementary Schools Get Added Security  January 4, 2012 | WMFE - Orange County elementary school students are returning to class Monday after winter break, and they may find more security. County leaders are appearing at one of the elementary schools receiving additional law enforcement protection in the wake of the mass shootings in Newtown, Connecticut. Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs and Sheriff Jerry Demings are visiting Lancaster Elementary Monday morning, highlighting the mayor’s new initiative to staff the county’s 78 primary schools with a sheriff’s deputy. The deputies will be at elementary schools in unincorporated Orange County for the rest of the school year at an estimated cost of between $2 million and $3 million, according to the mayor’s office. It will be funded by tax revenues. In a statement Friday, Orange County School District officials said they’re also enhancing security across the board, including an increase in surveillance and stricter check-in procedures for school visitors. Orange County’s middle and high schools already have law enforcement officers on campus. |
