Seminole County Parents Concerned About Rezoning Proposals

January 10, 2013 | WMFE - The Seminole County School Board is holding meetings throughout the county this week to discuss rezoning proposals intended to relieve overcrowding at some of the county's elementary schools.

More than 20,000 students could potentially be affected. The board will hold another meeting tonight at Lake Brantley High School in Altamonte Springs.

Seminole County is considering rezoning at 28 of its 36 elementary schools.

Because of shifting demographics, some of those schools are only partially full while others are overcrowded.

Tammy Potosky is president of the Seminole County Council PTA. She says parents are often reluctant to move their kids to a new school.

 “When you have your child at a certain school, most likely your neighborhood school, it’s hard to even imagine your kids in a different school with different teachers, different administrators and it IS tough.” Potosky said. 

The school board solicited online suggestions from parents over the Christmas holiday break and received more 150 proposals.

Rezoning board members sorted through some of those suggestions last night at meetings in Sanford and in Winter Springs.
