Judges Order Orange County to Put Sick Time Measure on Ballot

Feb 15, 2013 | WMFE - A three-judge panel has ordered the Orange County Commission to put a sick-time initiative on the next ballot that goes before voters. In a ruling late Friday, the court called the commission's interpretation of its own rules "not reasonable" after members voted to keep the measure off the 2012 general election ballot.

The new ruling says the Orange County Commission must allow residents to vote on whether employers should be required to give their workers paid sick time.

A group called Citizens for a Greater Orange County gathered 50,000 signatures in support of putting the sick-time initiative on last November’s ballot, but Orange County Commissioners called the measure’s language “confusing” and said there wasn’t enough time to re-write it.

The three-judge panel called the commission’s argument “impractical and contrary to the plain meaning of its charter.”

The next ballot goes before voters in August 2014.
