FDOT Turns to NASCAR for Road Safety Message

February 19, 2013 | WMFE- The Florida Department of Transportation is enlisting NASCAR to help promote pedestrian safety. A car branded with a pedestrian safety slogan will race at Daytona International Speedway next Saturday.

It cost $174,500 to have NASCAR driver Joe Nemechek promote the Florida Department of Transportation’s Alert Today- Alive Tomorrow pedestrian safety campaign during Daytona Speedweeks.

The department’s bicycle pedestrian safety program manager Trenda McPherson says with 250,000 spectators at the event, it’s worth it.

"We do see a spike in pedestrian crashes fatalities and injuries during speedweeks each year," McPherson says.

"When you’re at Daytona Speedway there is no parking on site, so everybody is a pedestrian at one point or another, so what a great opportunity to remind them to stay alert.”

Volusia is one of 10 high priority counties the department is focusing on as it attempts to reduce the crash rate- which in 2010 saw 499 pedestrians killed on Florida roads.

Orange County is also high priority- the pedestrian safety campaign will roll out there in late March.
