State Senate Votes to Prevent Local Sick Time Laws

April 26, 2013 | WMFE - The Florida Senate approved legislation Friday barring local laws on employee wages and benefits. Central Florida activists like Stephanie Porta of Organize Now say the measure stifles a local effort to mandate paid sick time.

Porta says the measure also erodes municipal authority.

"Today Republicans in the Senate stood up for corporations like Disney and Red Lobster and against the interest of families, who believe their own communities know what is best for them when it comes to issues like sick time."

Senators dropped a provision that would have prevented municipalities from requiring government contractors to pay a minimum or living wage.

That means the legislation faces another vote in the House next week.

Activists had gathered 50,000 signatures in support of putting the issue of paid sick time on last year's ballot. But Orange County commissioners scuttled the ballot measure.
