Legislature Approves Numeric Limits for Water-polluting Nutrients

May 1, 2013 | WMFE - Florida lawmakers approved legislation Wednesday that puts numeric values on how much polluting nutrients are allowed in state waters.

But Audubon of Florida's Charles Lee says the real work only is beginning, because numbers are meaningless without action.

"You have to go back upstream into the fields, into the lawns into the individual sewage treatment systems and redesign things so that the nutrients either stop or slow down."

The measure especially targets phosphorous, which causes water-clouding algal blooms. Environmentalists say the measure isn't strong enough and want more federal oversight.

It's headed next for Governor Rick Scott's desk for his signature.
