Roommate of FAMU Drum Major Pleads No Contest in Hazing Case

May 10, 2013 | WMFE - The roommate of a Florida A&M drum major who died after a hazing ritual won't go to trial. Rikki Wills pleaded no contest Friday. Prosecutors agreed to dismiss a manslaughter charge against him, and he'll be sentenced next month.

Wills had rejected a plea deal last week, and jury selection was to begin Monday. In addition to manslaughter Wills had faced two counts of misdemeanor hazing.

FAMU drum major Robert Champion died in November 2011. It was after the team's final game of the season in Orlando.

Champion submitted to a hazing ritual on a bus rented for the occasion. Other band members beat him, leaving bruises on his chest, arms, shoulders and back.
