Central Florida Jobless Rate Drops to 6.4 Percent

May 20, 2013 | WMFE - Central Florida's unemployment rate is down, at 6.4 percent. It's a significant dip from one year ago.

The unemployment rate in April is down from 8.2 percent a year ago, according to the state Department of Economic Opportunity. 

Central Florida leads all of the state's metro areas when it comes to job creation in leisure and hospitality. The region is second in education and health services.

Meanwhile, housing starts in Central Florida are up 63 percent from a year ago. 

Statewide the unemployment rate is at 7.2 percent – the lowest it's been since September 2008. Florida also has shown positive job growth for 33 consecutive months.
