Update: Tropical Storm Andrea Makes Landfall, Central Florida Begins Clearing  June 6, 2013 | WMFE - The National Weather Service says Tropical Storm Andrea is making landfall in Florida's Big Bend, as of the 5pm update. [Image: Tropical Storm Andrea Satellite Photo] The storm has strengthened in the last few hours – its maximum sustained winds have climbed from 60 to 65 miles per hour. Andrea is moving northeast at 17 miles per hour, and the center of the fast-moving system is making landfall across Dixie County near the Suwanee River. After landfall, Andrea will move northeastward along the southeastern U. S. coast tonight and Friday. Meanwhile, Central Florida's conditions are continuing to improve, with most of the storm's rain bands clearing the area. However, winds are expected to remain higher than normal, at about 25 miles per hour through Thursday evening, and fast-moving storm cells are still a possibility. Four inches of rain have been reported in some parts of Central Florida, and flooding remains a concern. Almost the entire Florida peninsula is under a tornado watch, except for the state's southernmost counties. The storm should weaken after landfall, and Andrea should lose its tropical characteristics by Saturday as it moves through the eastern United States. Tropical storm warnings cover Florida's west coast from Boca Grande to the Ochlockonee River, and on Florida's east coast from Flagler Beach northward to the Delmarva peninsula. |
