Florida Receives $7 Million Grant from US Labor Department to Help Job Seekers  July 15, 2013 | WMFE - Florida is receiving $7 million from the US Department of Labor to fund a program aimed at helping unemployed residents get back to work. Florida's grant is the second-largest among the 41 states and US territories getting similar awards. The US Department of Labor is sending out the money for each state’s Re-Employment and Eligibility Assessment program, or REA. The program provides job seekers with personalized re-employment plans, by matching available work with their career interests. And the REA is done in person, not by computer algorithm or automated phone operator. The Labor Department announced Monday they’d be splitting $64 million dollars between 38 states, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and the District of Columbia. New York is getting the biggest grant for the program – just over $11 million. Florida comes in second at about $7.1 million. Massachusetts scored the third-largest grant – $4.2 million. Labor Department officials said statistics show REA programs make it faster and easier for unemployed people to return to the workforce. |
