Sebelius Talks About Gun Violence at NAACP Convention

U-S Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius, in Orlando to speak at the NAACP Convention, said protecting children from gun violence is a job everyone needs to be involved in.

While Kathleen Sebelius' speech was largely centered around the Affordable Care Act, she took time to talk about Travyon Martin and the need to prevent gun violence. She said the teenager's death was a tragedy for his family, his community, and the country.  "But so are the tragedies of all the children we have lost because of gun violence before and since Trayvon was killed each and every day,” she said.

Sebelius said her department is looking at developing gun violence prevention programs and whether the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention can do better research and monitor gun related injuries and deaths.  Martin was shot and killed last year by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman, who said he fired in self defense. A jury acquitted Zimmerman of second degree murder and manslaughter charges on July 13th.
