Rather Than More Roadways, Mica Suggests Technology as a Solution to Central Florida Traffic

July 22, 2013 | WMFE - U.S. Congressman John Mica says more roads alone won't alleviate Central Florida's traffic congestion. The Winter Park Republican says improving technology can help traffic flow.

He wants elected leaders and traffic experts to find ways to better synchronize stop lights and anticipate traffic-slowing events like weather and basketball games.

"Just getting around your local town or community is a bear, and we've got to find a better way of moving people. It's good for the environment. It's good for energy. It's good for people's disposition."

Mica says technological solutions can compliment big projects underway like SunRail and a $2.2 billion expansion of I-4.

He says the region's lakes provide a natural barrier to roadways, making other solutions even more important.
