Florida Colleges, Universities Call for Immigration Reform  September 16th, 2013 | WMFE- A group of Florida colleges and universities is urging the state's delegation to the US House of Representatives to support immigration reform. 18 University and college leaders have written a letter that says fixing the immigration system is critical for the Florida economy. [Image: Florida Institute of Technology] The letter was signed by the leaders of 19 colleges and universities including Florida Institute of Technology president Anthony Catanese. In a conference call Monday Dr. Catanese said foreign students who get advanced degrees in engineering and computer science at Florida tech are mostly from China and India. “And we’re sending them back," said Catanese. "And they’re going back and competing with American companies and entrepreneurs, and they would like to stay here.” Catanese said he wants foreign students who graduate with science technology engineering or math degrees to have an opportunity to work in the U.S. and be put on a path towards citizenship. The letter he signed says the limits on high skilled visas are too low, and that creates an obstacle to growth. The letter also says Florida’s representatives in Washington should act before the end of the year to support immigration reform. |
