Florida Blue Cancels 300,000 Policies

Some 300-thousand Floridians are receiving letters from Florida Blue saying its canceling their health insurance policies. The move is being triggered by the Affordable Care Act.

The Affordable Care Act requires that come January first, all health insurance policies must cover “essential health benefits.” The list of those benefits numbers more than a dozen- but it includes things like doctor visits, maternity coverage and chronic disease management. Not all current polices provide that- including an estimated 80-percent of the policies issued by Florida Blue. So customers are receiving letters alerting them that Florida Blue is canceling policies that don’t meet federal requirements. Florida Blue Spokesman Mark Wright said in a written statement that the company quote- will provide our members with recommendations for new plan options. Florida Blue is specific to our state, but Kaiser Health News reports that similar cancellations are happening nationwide.
