Police Make Arrests as Demonstrators Sing, March for Immigration Reform  October 29, 2013 | WMFE - More than 100 demonstrators gathered Tuesday evening in Orlando to press Florida's congressional delegation for immigration reform. They chanted, pounded drums and marched through the heart of downtown. About a dozen sat in a circle in the middle of the street, linked arms and sang in a show of civil disobedience. They were arrested. More than a dozen groups joined to organize the event. Sister Ann Kendrick was there from the Hope CommUnity Center in Apopka. "Low-income, working people are just here cutting yards, working in agriculture, doing the low-end jobs. There's no legal way for them to come into the country and work. They're hungry. They're trying to support their families. They want the American Dream." Some had traveled in buses from as far away as Miami Beach. They said it was the latest in years of work for reform that includes a path toward citizenship and keeps families together. |
