Orange County Animal Services Starts Food Pantry for Pets

Oct 31, 2013 | WMFE - Orange County Animal Services will launch a service to help financially struggling pet owners feed their furry friends starting Friday. The new "Pet Pantry" will house donated bags of pet food. The shelter hopes the program will help keep pets with their families.

An unexpected expense like major car repairs or medical bills can mean tough times for a family. Money can get tight and pet food hard to afford. Diane Summers of Orange County Animal Services says the Pet Pantry is designed to help dog and cat owners through such a rough patch.

"With the way the economy's been lately, we are seeing animals surrendered because families can't provide for them, and we don't want something like just a simple bag of food to be what separates a pet from a loving family," says Summers.

The new Pet Pantry will give a free bag of pet food to struggling owners who can't afford to feed their cat or dog. But Summers says the program relies on donations from the community, so the Pet Pantry needs contributions of unopened, unexpired dog or cat food.

She says donations have already begun to arrive at the shelter.
