Health Department Breach Affects 2,000 Social Security Numbers

October 31, 2013 | WMFE - The health department in Orange County is notifying 2,000 patients of a security breach affecting their social security numbers. The information was used to file fraudulent tax returns.

Health department spokeswoman Mirna Chamorro says two employees have been terminated.

"Two of our former employees created client lists containing names and social security numbers from patients of our clinics."

Three people are charged. Shanterica Smith is charged with embezzlement, theft and fraud. Gerald Williams and Delray Duncan are charged with fraud.

Patients are being notified by phone and mail. The health department advises them to check their credit reports for any suspicious activity.

The breach does not include medical, bank or credit card information.
