Fomer Gov. Charlie Crist Announces Democratic Run

November 4, 2013 | WMFE - Former Florida Republican Governor Charlie Crist announced this morning he's running to get his old job back...this time, as a Democrat.

At a rally near his Saint Petersburg home, Crist accused current GOP Governor Rick Scott of catering to special interest groups, and said he would govern differently, “not by giving every break to Big Business, but by leading on the things that matter to you – good schools, affordable health care, respect for our environment, dignity for our seniors,” said Crist to a cheering crowd. “Because that’s who I am, and that’s what I believe in, and that’s what I’ll do if you help me become your next governor.”

Crist switched party affiliations in 2012, saying the current GOP climate is not a welcoming one for his moderate politics. During today’s announcement, Crist said that Scott’s administration represents an “ideological fringe.”

In 2010, Crist unsuccessfully ran for US Senate as an Independent. Tea Party favorite Republican Marco Rubio won the race and currently occupies the Senate seat.

Former state Senator Nan Rich is also seeking the Democratic nomination to challenge Scott.
