Orlando Joins 200 Cities Rallying for Higher Minimum Wage  December 4, 2013 | WMFE - Orlando is one of 200 cities scheduled to take part in a rally for higher pay for minimum-wage workers. Thursday's nationwide event has roots in last year's fast-food worker strike in New York City, and Orlando's protest will be held outside the world's largest McDonald's on Sand Lake Road. The noontime rally, organizing under the phrase “Low Pay is Not OK,” is part of a nationwide movement to raise minimum wage to $15 an hour. That may sound like a big leap at first – after all, Florida’s current minimum wage is $7.79 an hour. But citing a study published Tuesday by Alliance for a Just Society, Organize Now Executive Director Stephanie Porta says statistics show workers can’t live on that. “A living wage for a single working adult, in order to be able to pay all their bills and not be dependent upon food stamps or housing subsidies and that type of thing, they need to be paid $16.84,” says Porta. Organize Now is one of the groups coordinating Thursday’s rally. Porta says leaders from the small-business and faith communities will be among those turning out in support of the workers. |
