Local Charities Hope Giving Tuesday Is Gaining A Foothold Here

Just as Thanksgiving is recognized as the start of the holiday shopping season, the day after Cyber Monday is now being recognized as the start of the giving season.

Giving Tuesday is a national movement started a few years ago as a way to promote volunteerism and donations to charitable organizations that support basic needs like food, health and shelter. Heart of Florida United Way’s Bob Haight says Giving Tuesday is just starting to gain traction locally, but nationally it brought in some significant donations last year.

“Blackbaud, who is one of the national processors of gifts through websites, reported last year that just through Giving Tuesday just about 10-million dollars with of giving nationally, ” he says.

Haight says about 20-percent of all charitable giving takes place during the month of December, so it’s hoped Giving Tuesday will really catch on locally.
