FAA to Study Impact of Space Launch Complex in Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge  December 27, 2013 | WMFE - The Federal Aviation Administration will study the environmental impact of a space launch complex within the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. The FAA is seeking public comment on the complex, which would be built at the site of a former citrus community known as Shiloh. Space Florida wants to turn Shiloh into the world's first commercial orbital launch site for companies like SpaceX. Two vertical pads would accommodate up to 24 launches a year. Merritt Island has more threatened and endangered species than any other national wildlife refuge in the continental United States. Environmentalists say a new launch complex could harm those species. The FAA study will consider the impacts to wildlife and also historic properties. Public meetings will be held in early February in New Smyrna Beach and Titusville. |
