Central Florida Temps Low Enough to Cause Problems

The Orange County Health Department is warning people not to dismiss our current cold temperatures.

It’s not freezing, but it’s cold- and it’s been a sustained cold. Which means people living without heat could be at risk for hypothermia.  Orange County Health Department Director Kevin Sherin says even temperatures in the 40’s can trigger hypothermia if someone becomes wet or damp. He says babies and the elderly are the most at risk for hypothermia. But this week’s temperatures can pose another- perhaps unexpected risk.

“There is actually a risk of frostbite, if you had your ears that weren’t covered and you were walking for some distance, you could be at risk of frostbite,” he says.

He says early morning runners, walkers or cyclists should be aware of that risk and be sure to dress appropriately.
