Florida Immigration Advocates Upset; Expert Says It Won't Affect Elections

February 8, 2014 | WMFE, Orlando -- Florida advocates are reeling from news immigration reform is unlikely to pass in 2014, but a local expert says that won't affect elections here.

House Speaker John Boehner says he doubts Republicans in his chamber will move on it this year.  He says they don’t trust President Barrack Obama.

Lydia Medrano is the state director of the League of United Latin American Citizens – or LULAC.  She spoke to 90.7 News in November when immigration reform passing last year became unlikely: “You know elections are going to be coming up, and I know that Florida is one of the battle grounds.  So, those politicians that are against immigration reform can see a lot of people unhappy with them.”

But, a local expert says, even though immigration reform has stalled, it won’t affect this year’s U.S. House races in Central Florida.  Political Scientist Donald Davison of Rollins University says, “It certainly would encourage, you know, many Hispanic voters to support the Democratic party, but, given geography of the Congressional districts, I’m not sure it’s going to make too much of a difference.”

Davison says that’s true nationwide – and specifically in Central Florida.  He says Democratic Representative Alan Grayson has strong Hispanic support already.  Other districts have lower pro-immigration numbers.  Davison adds not all Hispanics consider immigration a key issue.

Boehner has said Congress should take on immigration.  Other conservatives have been less enthusiastic.
