Bill Will Exempt School Buses from Tolls

March 3, 2014 | WMFE, Orlando - Democratic State Representative Linda Stewart plans to file a bill Monday that would exempt school buses from paying tolls on state expressways.

The bill would give county school buses the same exemption law enforcement and firefighters currently have.

The Orlando lawmaker says the bill could save Orange County Public schools hundreds of thousands of dollars.

“Two-hundred thousand dollars that Orange County pays the Expressway Authority, and that’s about two and a half teachers. And they get their money from the state and they turn around and pay it to the Expressway Authority. I don’t think they should have to do that,” she says.

Stewart says the $200,000 is insignificant in the expressway authority’s billion dollar budget.

Stewart looked into the issue when a 13-year-old student from Howard Middle School called her office to ask about tolls paid by school buses.

The Florida legislative session starts March 4th in Tallahassee.
