Volusia Authorities Investigate Driver After Minivan Ends Up in Surf March 5th, 2014 | WMFE, Orlando- Volusia County authorities are deciding whether to lay criminal charges against a woman who drove her minivan into the surf at Daytona Beach Tuesday afternoon. The woman and her three children, ages 3, 9 and 10, were rescued and taken to hospital for evaluation. At a press conference Wednesday, Volusia County Beach Safety Director Mark Swanson says lifeguards helped two bystanders get the children out of the minivan. “The waves were strong, the water was cold, they got in the water, got them out quickly," says Swanson. "If it had been minutes longer, the outcome probably would have been different.” The three children are currently in the care of the Department of Children and Families. The Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson says his office is investigating why the woman drove into the water. "We are in contact with the state attorney's office," he told reporters. He says investigators will decide "whether we have a criminal intent involved with this, could this be some kind of a medical crisis, we have to look into all of those things to make sure we're going the right direction." Johnson says the woman spoke to Daytona Beach police before the incident, telling them she was heading for a shelter. "She did not even want to tell the officers where she was going because she was afraid that her ex would find out where she was going," he says. |
