Orange County Redistricting Fight Heads to Court

March 19, 2014 | WMFE, Orlando--An Orange County Commission redistricting lawsuit is scheduled for a federal court hearing tomorrow. The issue is likely to see a full trial despite last-minute attempts at resolution.

A Hispanic rights organization says Orange County Commissioners violated the Voting Rights Act during 2011 redistricting.  LatinoJustice says Hispanic population growth necessitates a voting bloc for the group, especially in Districts 3 and 4.

LatinoJustice President Juan Cartagena says he would be happy to see voter-approved, revised maps that address minority concerns.  Until then, his group is suing.  "I need to hear from the county if and when they get to the point that they would entertain the possibility of resolving the lawsuit in light of these politicial developments, but right now I haven’t heard from them," he says.  "The county is proceeding, just like we’re proceeding – to go to trial."

Commissioners are debating the compromise of adding two districts. They’re scheduled to discuss the issue next month.

The case is expected to go to trial in May.
