Former Lawmakers Pay Tribute to Veterans' Charity

April 2nd, 2014 | WMFE, Orlando- A non-profit that helps veterans and their families will be honored by former lawmakers in Washington DC tonight. The award has a special significance for 90.7 political commentator, former congressman Lou Frey.

Operation Homefront provides financial help for veterans and housing for those who are wounded as they transition out of the military.

Tonight it receives a Statesmanship Award from the Association of Former Members of Congress.

FMC board member Lou Frey- who served in the Navy- says wounded warriors need all the support they can get.

“It’s something that just leaves you… a, heartbroke and b, proud of what they’ve done and the guts they had and their unwillingness to quit,” says Frey.

As a congressman in the 1970s, Frey lobbied for a VA hospital in his district.

And he says Central Florida veterans will benefit from a brand new VA hospital now under construction in Lake Nona.

The massive new hospital is over budget and behind schedule– but it’s expected to be finished by the end of the year.

Other honorees at tonight's FMC awards dinner are Georgia Congressman John Lewis and former US Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez.
