Apopka Holds City Mayor Election Tuesday

April 7, 2014 | WMFE, Orlando - Residents of Apopka head to the polls Tuesday to choose a city mayor. Incumbent Mayor John Land faces City Commissioner Joe Kilsheimer in a runoff election.

With the exception of only one term, Land has been Apopka’s mayor since 1950. He is 93 years old.

But Kilsheimer thinks it time for a new direction for the city. His campaign has focused on the development of Apopka’s downtown as a way to keep residents inside the city for shopping and dining.

"Where we’re kind of going in this campaign is how can we make it possible for all residents of Apopka to connect in a way that makes them feel like they’re welcome and a part of the community," says Kilshiemer

His focus has also been on city government transparency and term limits for elected city officials.

Around 2,800 absentee ballots have been sent to Orange County Supervisor of Elections, and the city could see a record turnout for the election.

Kilsheimer Led Land by 10% of voters in the March general election.
