More than 100 beds at the clinic are empty as patients have been transferred to new domiciliary and nursing facilities in Lake Nona.

Mica on Monday announced he’s working with local veteran leaders and community officials to save the Lake Baldwin clinic.

Mica and other members of the Central Florida congressional delegation have also written to the secretary of the VA outlining their concerns.

“We want a decision to use those assets, not sit on them, for our veterans, and put them to the best possible use for those who’ve served our country,” says Mica.

Orlando VA medical center public affairs officer Heather Frebe agrees there’s good reason to keep using the clinic.

She says there’s going to be a demand for space as the veteran population in Central Florida continues to grow.

Frebe says one proposal submitted to the central VA office, would keep the Lake Baldwin facility open as an outpatient clinic.

She says the Orlando VA is waiting to hear what the final outcome will be.
