Oviedo To Be Named One of Central Florida's Healthy Weight Champs

The City of Oviedo is being recognized by the Florida Department of Health this week as a Healthy Weight Community Champion- one of six Central Florida cities to receive that recognition. The cities are coming up with their own innovative ways to support healthy living.

As part of State Surgeon General John Armstrong’s battle against obesity- Florida cities were challenged to implement policies that improve physical activity and nutrition. Six of the 37 cities being recognized as Healthy Weight Champions are in Central Florida. Seminole County Department of Health Officer Swannie Jett says Oviedo is being recognized for taking a Health In All Policy approach.

“The approach was to look for ways to improve parkways, increase bicycle facilities, look at how to promote safe walking lanes for citizens,” he says.

Oviedo will be recognized by Dr. Armstrong on April 25th.  The other five cities to make the list are Orlando, Winter Park, Winter Haven, New Smyrna Beach and Ormond Beach.
