UCF Student Collecting for Storm-ravaged Pensacola May 6, 2014 | WMFE, Orlando--Pensacola residents are recovering from historic rain and flooding. A University of Central Florida student is helping his hometown. UCF Junior Tyler Wright is away at college, but he says his Facebook feed is packed with photos of his storm-ravaged hometown, Pensacola. Days of brutal weather have left that the area with millions of dollars of damage – and thousands of people without housing. To help, Wright is collecting toiletries and money. "The devastation is similar to a hurricane, but it didn't, it didn't, get that proper preparation and also the proper press coverage because it was a no-name storm," Wright says. "The devastation is real. The loss is real, and there's thousands and thousands of lives that are being seriously affected right now." Wright says people can drop off goods at his UCF fraternity – Sigma Chi – or the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. They can also donate funds online. He says day-to-day items are more helpful than clothing – because many storm victims don't yet have homes for storage. The collection runs through Tuesday but might go longer.
