Laid-Off Workers Should Be Told About Online Health Insurance Exchange

May 5, 2014|WMFE Orlando. The White House is telling employers that when laid-off workers are given their Cobra option, they must also be told about the online health insurance marketplace.

Friday’s announcement is aimed at anyone on Cobra, regardless of how recently they lost their job.  Cobra allows an ex-employee to stay on the company’s insurance for a limited period of time, but they have to pay the full cost- and that sometimes is extremely expensive.  Central Florida Lead Navigator Anne Packham for that reason, it’s important that people know that health insurance navigators are still available for appointments.

“So we’re able to help people who are choosing between Cobra and possibly getting a marketplace plan,” she says.

The Cobra special enrollment period is available through July first. Packham advises calling 1-877-564-5031 for assistance.
