UPDATED: FBI Agent in Local Shooting Could Have Questionable Past

May 15, 2014 | WMFE, Orlando--The Council on American-Islamic Relations Florida is demanding a response to allegations about the checkered past of an FBI agent who killed a man in Orlando. Accusations against the agent include police brutality.

UPDATE: Orange–Osceola State Attorney Jeff Ashton tells WMFE, "I received the May 13, 2014 letter from CAIR by email at approximately 3:36 a.m. on Wednesday, May 14, 2014.  I am in the process of examining the contents of the letter and attachments which were sent and will respond directly to Mr. Shibley and CAIR when my review is complete."

A year ago, the agent shot and killed Ibragim Todashev during questioning related to one of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects.  Inquiries by the c and the Department of Justice cleared the agent of wrongdoing.

The FBI withheld the agent’s name, but CAIR and The Boston Globe say they identified him after removing redactions from documents.  They uncovered allegations that, as a police officer in California, the FBI agent engaged in police brutality and potential corruption.

CAIR Florida Director Hassan Shibley says neither Ashton nor the DOJ mentioned the agent’s history in their reports.  "At best case, it shows negligence," he says.  "At worst case, it shows that they were trying to hide something or they had an agenda in the report."

CAIR has written to the State Attorney, the FBI and the Department of Justice asking for transparency and renewed review of the shooting incident.

WMFE contacted the letter recipients and received a response only from Ashton.
