Police Arrest 26 in Dog Fighting Ring

May 28, 2014 | WMFE, Orlando - Twenty-six people face felony charges after police busted a dog fighting ring in Apopka. The dogs are in good condition but will be difficult to adopt out.

Diane Summers of Orange County Animal Services says her agency is housing at least some of the dogs after the bust Tuesday night.

Summers says the dogs have minor wounds and are aggressive toward people.

"Many had old scars. Some had small open wounds. Overall they're not in terrible condition, nothing beyond repair."

She says the dogs are not available for adoption while the police investigation is underway but suggests people can help in other ways.

"We receive an average of 53 dogs and cats each day. In the summer we're inundated with animals. We see a surge in impounds every summer. So our shelter was full to begin with, and now we're taking in an additional 14-plus dogs. And so if anybody wants to help the best thing they can do is adopt from our shelter."

Police say the dog fighting ring spanned Orange, Seminole and Volusia counties. About 40 people were at the home when the bust occurred, including two young children.
