Tymber Skan Condo Residents Seek Help from Orange County Commissioners

June 2, 2014 | WMFE, Orlando - Residents of a troubled Orlando condominium complex could have their water cut off due to thousands of dollars in unpaid utility bills. Now they're asking Orange County officials to help resolve a dispute with the Orlando Utilities Commission.

The Orlando Utilities Commission says two sections of the Tymber Skan on the Lakes Condo Complex owe $83,000 in overdue bills—and that no payment has been made since December.

So far, OUC hasn’t cut off water to the complex, but officials say they could take action at the end of the month.

Xelimar Mendez says her 14-year-old son is disabled—and the family needs water to clean his medical equipment.

“He’s completely disabled, on a wheelchair. He’s has a breathing tube, a feeding tube, and it’s critical for us. I mean for any family, but especially for us. We have nowhere to go,” says Mendez.

At an Orange County Commission meeting Tuesday, Mayor Teresa Jacobs said the county will consider giving money to postpone any water from being cut-off from the complex.

“We’re looking at diverting about $3 million to figuring out how to stabilize the situation," says Jacobs. "And if that’s something we have to look at, we will look at that as well.”

Residents believe they're suffering because some of their neighbors don't pay their bills. They want to have individual water meters for each unit to prevent other issues--but an OUC spokesperson says that they only use master water meters.

Mayor Jacobs says she will bring up the individual meters next week during a meeting with OUC officials.
