Report Finds Florida Aligns With Broader Educational Trends

June 11, 2014 | WMFE, Orlando -- Florida aligns with other states on two major education issues -- funding and standards. That's according to new analysis from the Pew Trust-backed Stateline news service.

Like other states, Florida used some of its budget surplus this year for education.  K-12 schools were given a historic $20.7 billion, while state colleges and universities were spared from automatic tuition hikes and given millions in extra funding.

Stateline Editor Scott Greenberger says Florida also has common ground with other states on educational standards. He says, “A lot of states [are] now expressing some reservations about Common Core, and Florida is one of the states where anti-Common Core efforts seem to be, seem to be growing.”

All but seven states have adopted Common Core educational standards.  Greenberger says they are prompting debate over privacy and state control.

The analysis is part of Stateline’s weeklong series called State Legislative Review.
