Ham Radio Enthusiasts Gear Up for Field Day

June 27th, 2014 | WMFE, Orlando- Ham Radio operators in Central Florida are preparing for field day this Saturday. It's a chance for enthusiasts to practice their skills in case disaster strikes.

Radio clubs across the United States will set up their equipment, including antennas, generators and solar panels, in unprepared locations.

Then they’ll try to contact as many other field day stations as possible.

Rob Osband, call sign N-4-S-C-Y, is with the Titusville Amateur radio club.

He says Ham radio operators have an agreement with the FCC to help with emergency communications after a disaster.

“I’d like to say that the skills I used in Homestead after Hurricane Andrew, I learned on field day,” says Osband, who adds he also helped out with communications following Hurricanes that swept through Florida in 2004.

The Titusville field day takes place in Fox Lake Park.

Orlando’s amateur Radio Club is setting up at the city’s Emergency Operations Center on North Andes Avenue.
