Orange County Partisan Elections Referendum Qualifies for Ballot

June 30, 2014 | WMFE, Orlando - A referendum to attach party affiliations to Orange County candidates qualified for the November 4th ballot.

If Orange county voters pass the initiative in November, candidates for County Commissioner and Mayor will have their party affiliation displayed on the ballot.

The referendum also moves these races to the general election in November instead of the primary elections in August.

90.7’s political commentator Dick Bachelor thinks that Democrats would get the greatest boost from partisan elections.

“The Democrats would like to see that elections become partisan because Democrats have done well in elections in Orange County,” says Batchelor.

Registered Democrats outnumber Republicans in Orange County, and Barack Obama carried the county by more than 75,000 votes in 2012.

Batchelor says that county Republicans will challenge the initiative.
