Florida Transportation Funding Could Take a Hit August 1 July 1, 2014 | WMFE, Orlando - Florida's transportation funding could take a hit August 1. [Photo courtesy of FDOT] A letter released today by the U-S Department of Transportation says that's when part of the federal Highway Trust Fund will become insolvent unless Congress takes action. But Regional Florida D-O-T Spokesperson Steve Olson says the state has been saving up - there's a financial cushion that would last three to six months if federal funding was delayed. “It almost then becomes triage, and what you would have to do is say … prioritize,” Olson said. “And what we prioritize is that safety would come first.” Olson says Florida would also safeguard initiatives that involve private dollars … like planned I-4 renovations through Orlando. He says the Sunshine State is lucky because only about 30 percent of its transportation funding comes from the federal government. |
