VA to Determine the Fate of Lake Baldwin Clinic

July 7, 2014 | WMFE, Orlando - According to Winter Park Republican congressman John Mica, who held a press conference outside the clinic today, a decision is expected soon on whether to keep the Lake Baldwin Park Veteran Affairs Clinic open.

Congressman Mica says the acting VA Secretary Sloan Gibson told him that a decision will be made in the next 60 days and that closing the facility is the last thing he wants to do.

A new VA hospital is scheduled to open at Lake Nona in 2015

Mica fears that the new hospital will not be able to support Central Florida’s growing veteran population.

“I have veterans living under underpasses I have veterans living in their cars twenty-five percent of the homeless population in Central Florida are veterans with no place to go”, says Congressman Mica.

Mica says he hopes that Lake Baldwin will be used for services such as outpatient care, mental health care, and clinical assistance.

180 beds are currently vacant at the Lake Baldwin clinic.
