Online Petition Calls for SunRail Service on Nights, Weekends

July 16, 2014 | WMFE, Orlando - An online petition is calling for SunRail service to expand to nights and weekends. The petition has garnered more than a thousand supporters.

David Porter started the petition on change.org. He's a 30-year Central Florida resident who grew up riding the subway in New York.

He says expanding would serve residents who work odd hours like hospital and airline employees.

"Clearly it's become a real issue with people thinking, well, if you're not going to run it seven days a week why bother? Because there are a lot of people who don't work a traditional, Monday-through-Friday, nine-to-five job."

Porter says expanding also would serve late-night drinkers and elderly weekend riders.

SunRail runs from 6:15 a.m. to 10:18 p.m.

State Department of Transportation spokesman Steve Olson says expanded service is being discussed. He says it comes down to cost and staffing.
