Arts Connection for January 12-13, 2007

Winter with the Writers is the month-long festival of the literary arts at Rollins College.  Each Thursday, from Jan. 25 through Feb. 15, celebrated writers will share their work & experience through master classes, readings and on-stage interviews with the festival's director, Connie May Fowler.  The Arts Connection's literary contributor, Irene Zabytko, previews the event.

King Lear opened this week at the Orlando-UCF Shakespeare Festival in Loch Haven Park.  Performances are Wednesdays & Thursdays at 7, Fridays & Saturdays at 8 and Sundays at 2, through Feb. 4.  For information, call 407-447-1700.

Guitar Shorty was born in Texas, but raised in Kissimmee.  He played with the Ray Charles band right out of high school and went on to a long career in the blues in Los Angeles.  In this feature by PW Fenton, he tells how he got his nickname.   Guitar Shorty will be coming to Lakeland in October for the Polk Museum of Art's Red, White & the Blues.
