Arts Connection for March 2-3, 2007

The premiere of a brand new show at Jester Theatre, and other highlights of productions opening this week. Also, the Executive Producer of the PBS hit, Antiques Roadshow gives a behind-the-scenes look, courtesy of the Morse Museum, a new book looking at how Florida women fared during the Great Depression, and an interview with Brandi Reissenweber, a former writer-in-residence at the Jack Kerouac House in College Park.

 Jester Theater's next production is their own original work, getting its national premiere this weekend - The Illiad, The Odyssey and All of Greek Mythology - in 90 Minutes or Less, written by Jay Hopkins and John Hunter.  Performances are Fridays & Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 2:30 in the Studio Theatre inside the Centrolplex Garage.  407-927-5043.

The Center Players at the Jewish Community Center are staging Oy! and other Mishagas, March 3-18, poking fun at Jewish mores and manners.  Performances are Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 2pm at the JCC in Maitland.  407-645-5933, ext. 245.

Orlando Repertory Theatre presents the classic To Kill a Mockingbird, through April 1st.  Weekend performances are Fridays at 7:30pm, Saturdays at 2:30 & 7:30 and Sundays at 2:30.  There are also weekday shows at 10:30am for school groups, including private schools and home-schools on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.  There is a Resource Guide online for teachers and parents.  407-896-7365.

The Morse Museum presents their annual Public Lecture next Thursday at Rollins College, and this year they are bringing in Marsha Bemko, the Executive Producer of PBS' Antiques Roadshow (seen on WMFE-TV).  Marsha will give A.R. fans a behind-the-scenes look at the popular TV program, which will be coming to Orlando for the first time on June 30.  (Guaranteed tickets will be available for a membership in WMFE - tune in Monday night at 8 to learn more.)

The lecture is Thursday, March 8 at 7:30pm in the Tiedtke Concert Hall at Rollins College.  407-645-5311

Last summer, Brandi Reissenweber was the Writer-in-Residence at the Jack Kerouac House in College Park.  The Arts Connection's Literary Contributor, Irene Zabytko, spoke with her about her work as a writer, and as the editorial assistant for Zoe Trope All-Story magazine.  Brandi wrote an essay about her experience in Orlando, and it was recently published in the January/February edition of Poets & Writers magazine.


Next Thursday, Valencia Community College's Visions & Voices Series will present singing/songwriter John Gorka, in a free concert at 1pm at the East Campus Performing Arts Center.  The music heard on The Arts Connection is The Gypsy Life, from his 1992 album, Temporary Road, released by High Street Records.
