Arts Connection for March 23-24, 2007

This week, just a 1/2 hour program with a story on Cypress Elementary in Kissimmee, FL - one of 5 schools in the nation chosen by the Kennedy Center for the Arts to receive a Creative Ticket Award. Also, highlights from this week's cultural calendar.

Cypress Elementary in Kissimmee, was honored by the Kennedy Center as one of only 5 schools in the nation to receive this year's Creative Ticket Award.  The program recognizes outstanding school-wide arts programs.  There are 5 arts specialist teachers at Cypress (Debbie Fahmie, music; Maggie Carrillo, drama; Melissa Cooper, dance, Nayda Flores, visual art; and Mandy Justenson, movement--general movement based on research on brain development), but the arts program is embraced by all the classroom teachers as well.   The school was 1st chosen as the state winner by Florida Alliance for the Arts/Arts for a Complete Education.

Students are now in Washington D.C. and will perfrom at the Kennedy Center's Millenia Stage on Tuesday.

The inaugural Rolf and Brigitte Gardy International Piano Competition concludes Sunday at 3 at the Peabody Auditorium in Daytona, when the 3 finalists (chosen this past week from a field of 22) will perform with the Jacksonville Symphony.  The winner will be announced at the conclusion of the concert.  386-253-2901

St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Oviedo presents the annual Lutheran Cantata Choir, Sunday at 3.  407-365-3408

Happenstance III is a collaborative dance showcase with 11 local choreographers.  It runs March 23-April 1 at the Johnny Holloway Theatre, inside Harwood-Watson Dance Studio on Humphries Ave., near the south entrance of Orlando's Baldwin Park.  407-228-0005

The on-air broadcast this week includes a segment from the Voices of Florida series, on the culture of Tarpon Springs' Greek Community.  It's is aired as part of Florida Heritage Month.
