Each year, the Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra holds a competition for its members to have the opportunity to perform a solo with the orchestra, or with the Orlando Philharmonic.  This year's winners were harpist Cattie Weddle, pianist Yoon Chung, and violist Kip Rieken.  We talk to the winners about the experience; Cattie performed in January and Chung in April.  Kip Rieken will perform a movement from the Walton Viola Concerto this Sunday at 4 at the Bob Carr, as part of the FSYO's final concert in their 50th Anniversary Season.

The Orlando Philharmonic, and composer Stephen Goldman, have sponsored the Young Composer's Challenge for 3 years - this year, however, they opened it up to teenage composers from 7 southern states, and the finalists were rewarded with a performance and comments from the professional musicians of the Orlando Philharmonic.  Meet the 6 finalists and hear their music on this special report.

The winners were Joseph Colombo in the Full Orchestra category for his piece, A Dreamer’s Field of Stars. Colombo, a senior at Winter Springs High School, won $2000 for himself and $3,500 for his school’s music program. In the Chamber Ensemble category, Samuel Ciullo won for his piece, Ethereal Motion. Ciullo is a senior at Boone High School. He won $500 for himself and $1000 for his school’s music program.
